How to use this web site

Registration

If you wish to take an active part in this community, you should register.

After completing the registration form, you should receive an email with your password, allowing you to log in for the first time. If you do not receive this email, you will not be able to login. Contact us so that we can manually validate your account.

Types of content

To use this web site efficiently, you should be aware of the different types of content available, and what they are used for:

  • Wiki pages: like any other wiki, they can be edited by member. They are used for documentation.
  • Projects: each project usually corresponds to one video being prepared by the community. Each project has its own issue tracker (see below).
  • Project issues: they are used to track bugs, feature requests, tasks, for each project. Thus, at any time we know what remains to be done to complete each project, etc.
  • Blogs: blogs are the most convivial part of the web site. Each member has her/his own blog. Blogs can be used like a public diary, to post one's thoughts about the project, etc. User can interact agreeably by leaving comments on each other's blog entries.

Raising the signal to noise ratio

An incredible amount of data is posted on the web every second in countless forums, discussion groups, mailing lists, chat rooms, etc. Generally speaking, the signal to noise ratio is very, very low.

This web site is organized in a way to increase the signal to noise ratio. The wiki pages can be updated and improved over time to ensure that the information is up to date, relevant, consise and on topic. The project issues that have been properly been dealt with can be set as being 'fixed', so that they stop showing on the default listing on each project's issue tracker: thus only still relevant issues show up, and the tracker is not clogged with past issues. Use your blog only for more personal musing and to add a touch of conviviality in the community.

You can help increase the signal to noise ratio, especially if your are a new member! If you have a question, it's because something is not properly documented, or the information is not found at the logical place. Regular users are accustomed to the site and take things for granted. New users are more likely to find faults in the documentation. See the next section, below.

Do you have a question?

Maybe you are just getting started with this web site, and you have a question about something.

  1. Look in the wiki first, to see if the answer to your question has not been documented already.
  2. If not, the best thing to do is to go to the general issue tracker, or if your question pertains to a more specific project, go to that project's issue tracker.
  3. Check if there is not already another issue with the same question.
  4. If not, click on the link 'create' to create a new issue and ask your question. It is important that you also say where in the wiki you would have expected to find the answer: this information will be useful to figure out which part of the wiki to update.
  5. After you get an answer, it would be nice if you could update the wiki yourself.

Tracking new content

You are interested in this whole project and you want to be able to track all recent changes.

If you visit this site regularly, the best page to check is the general site tracker: See the Recent posts link in the side menu .
It lists all the new content on the site. If you are logged in, it will show you which pages you have not visited since the last update (or since their creation).

Subscriptions and email notification

On each node, you might see a 'subscriptions' collapsed fieldset. This will allow you to subscribe to specific nodes, node types, authors, etc, so that you can receive email notifications when new comments are posted in threads that interest you, etc.

You can manage your subscriptions by going to your account page: check the subscriptions page.

You have also the possibility to subscribe to ALL issues but only of a particular project. Go to that project's issue tracker, and see the 'subscribe' link at the top.
