Interview William Catton and Frank Rotering

Description

This TODO item is inspired by Frank's blog entry: http://overshoot.tv/node/76

William Catton is the author of the 1980 book "Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change."
He is a retired professor in Washington state.

Frank Rotering is the author of the 2007 book "Needs and Limits, A New Economics for Sustainable Well-being". (http://NeedsAndLimits.org )

Basically, we need someone with a good camera, who would be able to make a technically good video interview, and arrange a meeting with them with a series of prepared questions.

Actually, since Frank is part of this community, it would be fine if you knew someone who could start by interviewing you. I think it would be a great idea to start by making a small feature video on yourself and your book. We'll certainly gain experience in the process, and it would provide some interesting material, too. :)

Frank,

It seems likely that we'll use an interview of yourself for our first video.

Can you conduct the interview in a way that parts of it can be easily used in different videos, and in different contexts? By that I mean, it'd be convenient if we can use your answers without needing to include the questions. I'm sure you've seen this kind of documentaries were people talk, and their answers are coherent and self-standing, without seeing or hearing the questioner.

More likely, you don't even need questions. Just talk in front of the camera. :)

Frank:

Bulletin: I just spoke with William Catton and he agreed to be interviewed next month on camera. This means I have to get a camera quickly and learn how to use it. Again, any help on this would be greatly appreciated. It also means that our first video will probably be an interview with me about overshoot basics. That way Patricia and I can get familiar with the interview format.

That's great news. We better get started ironing out our workflow.

Please give me a few days to straighten out all this video stuff. I took a book out of the library and need to read it, and I'm looking at Windows Movie Maker and alternatives re. editing. I've also been checking out the buying and renting of video cameras.

Re. the Catton interview: He's sending me a CV by snail mail so I have basic biographical/career information, and I will send him a list of questions I'd like to ask him. So that's moving along.

I should add that I'm finding the blog/wiki style of this website rather confusing. I've been an email person for almost 25 years, and am used to a linear conversation. I didn't check your comments here until you pointed them out to me.

Re. buying (or renting) new hardware, see the other issue, where I was trying to tell you to make some tests first with what you have:

If it's ok, why go to trough unecessary expenses. If it's inadequate, at least we'll be clearer in which way it is inadequate, and you'll understand better what to look for.
