Sam,

You need to learn about bezier curves and bezier circles.

Try to create a simple character with bezier curves:

1) spacebar > add > curve > bezier ...

2) Press 'tab' to go to edit mode.

3) select and move (G = grab) the points.

4) try e (e = extrude) to create new points.

#2

For a 2 D character, you can also add a mesh > circle and a mesh > plane.

#3

I have 2 questions:

- how to add new points into a bezier circle.
- how to close a shape made of bezier curves.

You can add a new point between two existing points by selecting the two points and pressing W
( http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Tutorials/Modeling/Curves/Bézier )
To close the curve and turn it into a single continuous loop, select at least one of the control vertices on the curve and press C. To close the curve and turn it into a single continuous loop, select at least one of the control vertices on the curve and press C.
